Bikram's 60 Day Challenge
Bikram highly recommends practicing his yoga every day for 60 days, especially as a beginner. He says coming every day for two months is the best gift you could give yourself to get your body and mind young and supple and beautiful again.
If you're ready for a new body, a new mind and new way of life we highly recommend you take Bikram's Challenge. Not only will you improve your health and well being by participating and completing this Challenge, you will learn that anything is possible when you set your mind to it. You will "Break Through Your Limits".
If you're interested in starting a Challenge, let us know at the front desk and we will put a 60 Day Challenge Chart on the board for you so you can keep track of your classes. In order to successfully complete a Challenge you must complete 60 classes in 60 days (or less). If you have to miss a class you can double up on another day by taking two classes. If you will be out of town, you can take a Bikram class at another school but you must bring back a receipt to prove you kept up your Challenge. You can even finish early by taking more than one class a day. Student's who successfully complete the Challenge will receive a gift from BYA recognizing your achievement.

New Year's group 60 Day Challenge starts January 2nd - 15th 2010. What an amazing way to start the New Year! Yoga everyday with the support of your yoga family! BYA will host a celebratory party after the challenge for all those that successfully complete the 60 classes in 60 days.
Bikram advertises that if you complete his 60 day challenge, you will have a new body, new mind, new life. That sounded extremely appealing to me, so I signed up. Here I am, 60 days later and I never imagined how this challenge would change me. Sure, my body's changed physically, but I don't even care about that now. More powerful and more important to me, is the commitment I made to myself. I've never been the person who puts themselves before others, but for the past 60 days it was all about me! 90 minutes each day, just for me: time for me to be with myself and learning to love myself. I was surprised at how feelings that I thought I had gotten past, resurfaced during these 60 days. There were days where I found myself crying and not really even knowing why, but just knowing that my body needed to let it go. Bikram yoga taught me to acknowledge those feelings and to let them leave my body; healing pose by pose.
Another thing that brought me through the door each day was the fact that my challenge was dedicated to someone or something. I really liked this idea and some days it really helped me get through class. It took me a while to decide on whom to dedicate my challenge to; there are so many people worthy of my hard work and dedication. But for this challenge, I chose to dedicate it to my Grandmom and Poppop (my maternal grandparents). I chose to dedicate my challenge to them because they both battled cancer for longer than 60 days before the disease took their lives. I figured that if they could fight through each day with a terminal illness, then I had no reason to not make it to 60 classes in 60 days. There were times when I was in a posture and wanted to give up and I would think to myself, "Grandmom and Poppop couldn't give up...they didn't have the choice. Fight through it!" There are many, many things in my life that I couldn't have done without my Grandmom and Poppop, and now I can add this 60 day challenge to that list.
This challenge was a truly amazing journey and I'm so grateful for everyone who was a part of it. Many thanks are due for all the support from my friends, family, and fellow yogis. Remember, you are capable of so much more than your mind will allow you to realize. Melissa Pavnick
"I think my advice for the Bikram Challenge is simply to make "finishing the 60 Day Challenge" your goal, rather than improving postures, weight loss, etc. This really helped me on my hard days when terms such as balance, flexibility and strength were completely foreign concepts to my body or days when no matter how hard I tried I could not hold a pose that I had been working on improving. Mentally on those days my brain tried to sabotage my body by taunting..."I practice better yoga when I don't come ever day, why am I doing this"? Throughout my 60 Day Challenge, I had amazing practice days and days where I thought I did better poses on Day 1 of just starting Bikram! What allowed me to push through was the fact that my goal was simply to finish my Challenge; it had nothing to do with how I did on any one day. I went up and down so many times in my yoga practice that I really had no choice but to accept my body and what it was able to give or not give on any set day. However, looking back NOW, it is pretty cool to see how my "worst" poses (namely bow pulling) got better and my "favorite" poses got even stronger...unfortunately my "hated" pose (2nd part of awkward), I still really do not like it!!" "...the next day I went back and I kept going back every single day of my two week trial period. And so began my 60 day challenge from my very first day of class! I can't even begin to tell you what a difference this has made in my life. Shelby told me I would have a new body, new mind, and a new spirit after 60 days and it's true. My body has been totally transformed. I am leaner, toner, more muscular than I have ever been at any time in my life. I have always been physically fit and health conscience. I've had fitness memberships of every kind. You name it, I've done it. But nothing has ever grabbed my attention and made me take notice like Bikram Yoga. Every class is such a challenge. Every day is a test of my determination, my stamina, my focus and willpower. And that is what I love about it. Karen Gray
My First 60 Day Challenge
"I always leave with more energy and spirit than I begin class with. I just finished my 60 day challenge and report more stamina and determination in my life. It definitely is an upward climb for me, but one that is so worth the effort. The staff has been wonderful and encouraging. My postures are improving with time and the gentle correction and guidance provided by all the teachers is so helpful. Every class is a true learning experience. It doesn't matter how many hundreds of times we hear the dialogue there is always something new and challenging about it."
60 Day Challenge - Round Two
This 60 day challenge has taught me to "trust the process." Bikram Yoga Avondale's 90 minute torture chamber has strengthened my body and my mind in so many ways.
I had some amazing classes and some classes where I struggled. Try as I might, I could not become a "Japanese ham sandwich"! Just visioning a "flower petal blooming, or a perfect "T as in Tom" made my head spin and no matter how hard I kicked I could not stay there forever. But I came to class with no expectations and those were the classes that were the best! So what if I was a "broken umbrella," I just gave it all I had and I found that I did actually manage to do many of the postures correctly. I "bounced and bounced and bounced" as hard as I could and I tried for an "upside down L like Linda" and worked towards sitting in that "chair."
And maybe, just maybe, if I keep coming to class and catch that English bulldog that runs off with my determination and that Bengal tiger that still has some of my strength my head will touch my knee someday.
So special thanks to Shelby, John, Ben, Terri, Sabre, Stacey, Erin, Niki and Don for your genuine concern for all of us and your evident love of the practice. And thanks to our incredible front desk ladies for their wonderful karma and for encouraging me to be the best I can be and to never give up because it works, it truly works! Sweet, sweet Savasana!
P.S. I have learned to lock my damn knee!! Debra Cox
"In April I completed the 60 Day Challenge and on Day 58 I completed my first triathlon. (My only training for the triathlon was Bikram Yoga...no kidding.) With a healthy shoulder and back, I was also able to complete the entire tennis season from September through May this year without any lapses due to injury!" Stefi McGeorge
"Bikram promises that in doing this practice of Yoga for 60 days you will gain a new body, new mind and new life. During this 60 day challenge, I received many wonderful benefits in all three areas as Bikram promises, mainly with a new body. I lost weight, regained some feeling in my right leg and foot and my under active thyroid stabilized." Deidra Scott
